NikonRumors just posted a set of leaked images for the upcoming D800. The body style is quite a departure from Nikon’s current DSLR prosumer shape, so I was thrown off when I first saw the new camera design. I was under the impression, upon seeing the images, that the camera was closer to the size of the Dx000 lineup (such as the D5100 or D7000), which was a huge disappointment. Not only are those bodies lesser build quality, but they are also uncomfortable for me in most shooting situations. The D700 feels great in the hands, and really screams “build quality” when you hold it.
So, I decided to find a comparison image between the D700 and the leaked D800 images so I could see just where Nikon cut corners on the new, smaller body.
To my surprise, they are essentially identical in size! I was shocked to realize that my impression of a more diminutive body design was, in reality, caused by the more rounded lines on the top area around the prism housing compared to the older, more boxy D700. I resized each image so the hot shoes were the same size, and voila — they’re pretty much a match in girth. Take a look for yourself:

D700 looks MUCH better!
Let’s put this in perspective…
A few weeks (months?) ago, we English speakers were speculating on what a French website was saying in French about the new Nikon body. Now we’re on a photo which could be just a Lego camera for all we know.
Speculate all you want — the most logical conclusion is that THIS image of THIS camera body is real, and that this is the next gen camera. If you disagree, please list out the specific points that support your claims.
I have yet to hear anybody point to any proof or even strong evidence that this is fake.

I just need NIKON to launch the darn thing now – BEEN waiting a long time now. I want to buy it ASAP.
I hear you, Joe. It’s been a rough year for all the electronics companies, but Nikon seems to have been hit particularly hard. But leaked images show signs that this thing is getting close. Hallelujah!
I hope so, it sure looks like it, hope it’s still this year Ron. Wonder how long we would have to wait before we could buy after the launch? If nikon want business they have to make sure it’s available before the Canon 1Dx

Typically the cameras are first seen 1-2 months after announcement. I imagine there will, as usual, be some lag between the first shipments and mass availability. The best thing you can do is pre-order the SECOND it’s an option. And as for announcements, there’s still that December announcement NR is reporting on…we’ll have to see. Either way, remember to keep your expectations in check. Nikon has had a really rough year.
I don’t think the 1Dx is going to be a threat to this camera based on the price point which is being predicted.
